Day 16 - Last Day

Today is our last day before we head back to Medan. We'll have a couple of days there resting before catching a flight back to London via Singapore.

Three of us spent the morning out on the river tubing and Mark was applying for jobs and having a rest. It turns out piloting a tube on your own is slightly more challenging - I was tipped out into the rapids once before I figured that out. To add to the fun, I was bitten on the foot by a local spider. Not too much drama and hopefully might transfer some sort of natural superpower. The last of the series of unfortunate events was later on when our balcony was invaded by macaques and one decided to challenge me to steal a water bottle.

Our time on the river was fun despite the mini-challenges. We saw a flight of hornbill, an eagle and many colourful butterflies and dragonflies.

Our children's exams meant we could travel early this year so as we were preparing to leave, we met a good few British people arriving for their first days in Bukit Lawang. We said our goodbyes to the restaurant owners, tube renters, shop owners and other local people who we'd got to know over our time here.

Keep an eye on the blog for a couple of reflective pieces on conservation and culture that I'll write over coming days.
