Our stay at Batu Kapel has come to an end and it is with mixed feelings we move on to Bukit Lawang village. We started the day with another amazing breakfast from the local team before setting out on our last monitoring trips. The first route seemed very quiet but our guide Embera found two orangutans feeding in a rubber tree. We watched them from a respectful distance.
There are a lot of interesting birds around the area. On the walk back we saw a Crested Serpent Eagle, a bee eater and several shrike.
As we walked through the jungle we saw a farming couple who were harvesting rubber from the rubber trees in the traditional way. They cut a channel for the rubber sap to drain along and collected the sap in a coconut.
After saying our goodbyes we got on our motorbike taxis across to our hotel in Bukit Lawang. The motorbike ride through the jungle was very much like Mario Karts but with added chickens ! The drivers are very skilled though. We had a great dinner and then had a wander about to see the local wildlife and outlets.
